This week, the Attleboro Fire Department conducted our annual Ice Rescue Training.
Ice rescues are considered low-frequency, high-risk incidents. While these calls are uncommon, they require a high level of coordination, technical skill, and calm decision-making under extreme conditions. Annual training ensures our members are prepared to operate quickly, smoothly, and safely if the need arises.
During this training, firefighters practiced:
- Donning and operating in cold-water dry suits
- Victim approach and removal techniques
- Tethered rescuer operations
- Shore-based support assignments
- Self-rescue and firefighter survival procedures
- Scene command and communication coordination
Cold water environments present significant hazards, including rapid heat loss, unstable ice conditions, and limited mobility. Repetition and hands-on evolutions are critical to maintaining proficiency and team coordination.
Training like this reinforces our commitment to preparedness and ensures that when a rare emergency occurs, our crews are ready to respond safely and effectively.
