The Attleboro Fire Department (AFD) takes an all-hazards approach and is always prepared to protect our community. When emergencies involve dangerous chemicals or unknown substances, the Commonwealth deploys the Massachusetts State Hazardous Materials (HazMat) Team—a specialized unit trained and equipped to handle incidents far beyond the scope of local resources.
AFD’s own District Chief Scott Godin proudly serves as a member of this elite team. The State HazMat program is divided into regional response units across Massachusetts, ensuring rapid coverage and support to any community in need.
- Identify and analyze unknown materials
- Contain and mitigate hazardous chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear threats
- Support decontamination operations
- Provide technical guidance during large-scale or complex incidents
Membership on the State HazMat Team requires firefighters to meet rigorous qualifications, including:
- Hazardous Materials Technician certification
- Completion of specialized state and federal training courses
- Ongoing education and proficiency testing to maintain operational readiness
Through DC Godin’s service, AFD brings added expertise back to our own department while contributing to the safety and security of the entire region.
