ATTLEBORO, MA — The Attleboro Fire Department is preparing for a major winter storm expected to impact the region from Sunday into Monday. Current forecasts call for 12–18 inches of snowfall, with the potential for locally higher totals. Unlike recent storms, temperatures are expected to be warmer, producing wet, heavy snow that may weigh down tree limbs and utility lines, increasing the risk of power outages.
The Department has been closely monitoring weather conditions and is coordinating with other City departments to ensure continuity of operations and public safety. Increased staffing levels will be in place throughout the storm to support emergency response needs.
An Emergency Operations Center (EOC) has been activated to coordinate storm response efforts while maintaining normal fire department operations. A storm assistance line will be activated at 5:00 a.m. on Monday, February 23, 2026. Residents may call 774-203-1991 for non-emergency, storm-related assistance during activation hours.
The City’s Emergency Management Team is prepared to open warming centers and/or emergency shelters if conditions warrant. Should shelters be opened, locations will be posted on the City of Attleboro website and the Attleboro Fire Department social media. Residents may also contact Attleboro Fire Dispatch at 774-203-1991 for information regarding shelter availability.
A citywide parking ban remains in effect. Residents are strongly urged to stay off roadways whenever possible to allow snow removal operations to proceed efficiently and to ensure access for emergency vehicles.
Winter Storm Safety Reminders
The Attleboro Fire Department urges residents to take the following precautions during and after the storm:
- Avoid downed power lines. Always assume they are energized and dangerous. Report downed lines to 9-1-1 immediately.
- Use generators safely. Generators must be operated outdoors only, positioned away from doors, windows, and vents to prevent carbon monoxide exposure.
- Test smoke and carbon monoxide alarms. Ensure alarms are functioning properly, especially when using alternative heating sources.
- Clear exterior vents. Keep all furnace, dryer, and other intake/exhaust vents clear of snow. Melting snow can refreeze around exhaust outlets, potentially trapping dangerous gases inside the home.
- Shovel safely and take breaks. Wet, heavy snow can place significant strain on the heart and muscles. Take frequent breaks, stay hydrated, and avoid overexertion. If you feel chest pain, shortness of breath, dizziness, or unusual fatigue, stop immediately and seek medical attention.
- Clear fire hydrants. If there is a hydrant near your property, please shovel at least a 3-foot clearance around it to ensure rapid access during an emergency.
