ATTLEBORO, MA – Yesterday’s storm was truly unprecedented. The City of Attleboro recorded 32 inches of snowfall, with drifts reaching five feet in some areas. It was a day that tested our community and our department in ways few storms ever have.
The Attleboro Fire Department responded to 63 calls for service during the storm. Despite more than doubling our normal daily emergency response volume, the men and women of the Attleboro Fire Department answered every single call for help. The conditions were extraordinarily difficult. Fire apparatus became stuck on nearly every response. But our members did not let that deter them. After completing a call, they dug themselves out; often by hand; so they could respond to the next emergency. That commitment speaks volumes about who they are and what this department stands for.
Prior to the storm, the Attleboro Fire Department and our Emergency Management team had an Incident Action Plan in place. While this storm brought challenges no one fully anticipated, our preparation, coordination, and determination ensured that someone responded to every emergency. What does that mean for our community? It means that even under some of the worst conditions imaginable, you can count on help coming. Someone will come. There is a great deal to be said about that level of dedication and reliability.
Many of our members have now been operating for more than 48 hours with minimal rest. They have pushed through physical exhaustion, cold temperatures, and relentless conditions without hesitation. Their resilience, professionalism, and unwavering sense of duty are nothing short of remarkable.
In addition to emergency responses, firefighters were plowing city streets between calls in an effort to maintain access throughout the city. Our crews ensured that essential Sturdy Health staff were transported safely to the hospital so they could continue caring for patients. We conducted 10 news interviews with various media outlets to keep our community informed and updated throughout the storm. And behind the scenes, there are countless additional efforts that made a difference but may never be fully seen.
This was a difficult day for our first responders; there is no doubt about that. But as Chief of this department, I remain fully confident in the dedication and capability of these men and women to ensure the safety of our community, no matter the conditions.
To the residents of Attleboro, thank you for your continued support of your Fire Department. Your cooperation, patience, and encouragement do not go unnoticed.
Most importantly, I want to personally thank the firefighters of this department. I could not be more proud of the work you performed over the last 24 hours. Your commitment to this city, your loyalty to one another, and your refusal to quit under extreme conditions embody the very best of the fire service.
