Attleboro Fire Department Introduces New Video Laryngoscopy Technology to Enhance Emergency Patient Care

ATTLEBORO – The Attleboro Fire Department is pleased to announce the implementation of the IntuBlade video laryngoscope, an advanced airway management device designed to assist paramedics in providing lifesaving care during medical emergencies.

The new technology provides Attleboro Fire Department paramedics with enhanced visualization of a patient’s airway during endotracheal intubation, a critical procedure used when a patient is unable to adequately breathe or maintain their own airway.

Unlike traditional direct laryngoscopy, which requires providers to obtain a direct line of sight to the vocal cords, the IntuBlade utilizes a camera to display the airway on a screen. This technology allows paramedics to better visualize anatomical structures and guide the placement of a breathing tube, particularly in challenging airway situations.

In the prehospital environment, paramedics frequently perform lifesaving procedures under difficult conditions, including confined spaces, poor lighting, and unpredictable patient circumstances. Video laryngoscopy provides an additional tool to help providers manage these challenges while working toward successful airway placement.

Beyond its clinical capabilities, the IntuBlade also features video recording technology that will support the department’s Quality Assurance and Quality Improvement (QA/QI) program.

The recording capabilities allow designated personnel to review airway procedures, evaluate techniques, identify opportunities for improvement, and provide valuable feedback to paramedics. This process can also enhance continuing education and training by allowing providers to review actual procedures and learn from real-world experiences.

“Providing our paramedics with the latest technology and equipment is an important part of delivering the highest level of emergency medical care to our community,” said EMS Chief Steve Stellakis. “The IntuBlade gives our paramedics another valuable tool to manage difficult airways in the field. Its video recording capabilities also allow us to review procedures, identify opportunities for improvement, and strengthen our quality assurance and quality improvement programs. Ultimately, this investment is about improving patient care, supporting our paramedics, and continuing to advance the level of service we provide to the residents of Attleboro.”

As part of the implementation process, representatives from the IntuBlade team visited the Attleboro Fire Department to provide hands-on demonstrations and familiarize department personnel with the new equipment. These demonstrations allowed paramedics to ask questions, practice using the device, and gain a better understanding of its capabilities before utilizing it in the field.

The Attleboro Fire Department would like to extend its appreciation to Dani, Reagan, and Kagen of the IntuBlade team for taking the time to visit the station, share their expertise, and assist department members with the transition to the new technology.

The addition of the IntuBlade reflects the Attleboro Fire Department’s ongoing commitment to advancing emergency medical services through modern equipment, continued training, and evidence-based quality improvement initiatives.

Through investments in technology and professional development, the department remains dedicated to providing high-quality emergency medical care to the residents and visitors of Attleboro.
