The Attleboro Fire Department’s Fire Investigation Team is responsible for investigating every fire within the city to determine its origin and cause. This work not only ensures accuracy and accountability after an incident but also provides critical information that helps the department and community prevent future fires.
The team is led by Lt. Jacob Springs with members Capt. Nick Sheehan and Lt. Gerry Normandin. Each investigator holds a Fire Investigation Technician Certification through the International Association of Arson Investigators and completes a minimum of 24 hours of continuing education annually.
Team members also attend the National Fire Academy’s Fire Investigation Essentials (R0772) course, built on the nationally recognized standards of NFPA 921: Guide for Fire and Explosion Investigations and NFPA 1033: Professional Qualifications for Fire Investigator.
Investigators complete extensive prerequisite training with coursework covering fire dynamics, scene safety, building construction, evidence collection, fatal fire investigations, search and seizure, and the scientific method for fire/explosion investigations.
Through their training and expertise, the Fire Investigation Team delivers thorough, professional investigations that strengthen public safety, support fire prevention efforts, and maintain the community’s trust.
