As the Fourth of July holiday quickly approaches, the Attleboro Fire Department would like to remind all residents that the use of fireworks by individuals is illegal in Massachusetts.
According to the Massachusetts Department of Fire Services, more than 550 fires and explosions involving illegal fireworks have occurred across the state over the past five years. These incidents have injured six firefighters and caused nearly $1 million in property damage.
Between 2019 and 2023, over 200 people were treated for burns and other serious injuries related to fireworks in Massachusetts. At least 24 individuals suffered severe burns.
Massachusetts law prohibits the possession, use, and sale of fireworks without a professional license. Violators may face fines ranging from $100 to $1,000, and in some cases, up to one year of imprisonment. All fireworks will be confiscated.
Leave fireworks to the professionals. The City of Attleboro will be hosting a professionally permitted fireworks display that meets all safety requirements under Massachusetts General Laws (MGL Chapter 148 §39).
To ensure the safety of the public:
- A staffed fire engine will be present from the moment fireworks arrive on-site until the display is confirmed complete and safe.
- Temporary barriers and fencing have been placed to protect spectators — do not cross or jump any barriers. These are active safety perimeters and unauthorized access could place you in a hazardous area.
- The Attleboro Fire Command Post will be stationed on the south field along with an ambulance and personnel ready to respond.
- AFD bike teams will be patrolling the area to quickly reach any medical or safety-related issues.
- An engine will be stationed on Chessett Lane to monitor for potential embers and fire hazards in surrounding areas.
If you see something concerning, say something. Public safety officers and first responders will be clearly visible and positioned throughout the event.
In case of an emergency:
- Remain calm
- Follow instructions from fire or police personnel
- Evacuate in either direction on North Avenue
Let’s celebrate safely and responsibly this Fourth of July.
