ATTLEBORO – The tradition of the Honor Guard in the fire service, like many of the practices within the profession, traces back to the military. Its role is rooted in a simple but profound principle: to honor.
To honor is defined as “to regard or treat (someone) with admiration and respect: to regard or treat with honor.”
For firefighters, pride and respect are woven deeply into the culture of the job. The Attleboro Fire Department Honor Guard carries those values forward by providing a formal, dignified presence at ceremonies such as promotions, parades, retirements, and funerals. Their commitment ensures that the department’s traditions and the sacrifices of its members are always recognized with the respect they deserve.
The Honor Guard is led by Firefighter and USAF Veteran Justin Jackson, with members Firefighter Sean Winbourne, Firefighter Kelsea Gardner, Firefighter Jacob Hardy, Firefighter Paul Jacques, and District Chief Mark Renker. The team is a volunteer unit, funded entirely by its members, which is a testament to their personal dedication to service and tradition.
Many associate an Honor Guard with funerals, and for good reason. In those moments, the Guard represents the department, the profession, and the community, offering reverence and stability to grieving families. Standing at attention, carrying the flag, or presenting arms. They bring structure, dignity, and respect to what may be the most difficult day in a family’s life.
Yet, the role of the Honor Guard extends beyond moments of sorrow. They are also present during times of celebration such as retirements, promotions, and community events where their presence elevates the occasion and pays homage to the years of sacrifice and service of fellow firefighters. Their ceremonial precision underscores the department’s respect for its members and its history.
