With warmer temperatures expected, the Attleboro Fire Department wants to remind residents that ice conditions are becoming increasingly unsafe. Even if ice appears solid, no ice is 100% safe and warming weather can rapidly weaken it.
Ice strength is affected by many factors, including water depth, currents, snow cover, ice age, and recent temperature changes. You cannot judge ice safety by looks alone.
Falling through ice is extremely dangerous and can be fatal. The Attleboro Fire Department always encourages preventing an emergency before it happens. Ice rinks will always be the safest way to enjoy skating.
Before heading near or onto ice:
• Tell someone where you’re going and when you’ll return
• Carry a charged cell phone
• Bring ice picks and rope
• Wear a life jacket, it can keep you afloat and provide insulation
If you fall through the ice:
• Stay calm and call for help
• Do NOT remove winter clothing, trapped air helps with flotation
• Turn back toward the direction you came from
• Place your arms on solid ice and kick your legs while pulling yourself up
• Once out, lie flat and roll away to distribute your weight
• Get warm immediately and seek medical advice
If someone else falls through:
Remember “Preach – Reach – Throw – Go”
• Preach: Call 911 and reassure the victim
• Reach: Extend a rope, ladder, branch, or jumper cables from shore
• Throw: Toss something that floats
• Go: If it’s unsafe, do NOT attempt a rescue—get help
If a pet falls through:
Do NOT attempt a rescue. Call for help.
Well-meaning pet owners can quickly become victims themselves. Always keep pets leashed near ice.
As temperatures rise, ice that was once safe may no longer be. Please use extreme caution and help keep yourself, your family, and first responders safe.
