ATTLEBORO — The Attleboro Fire Department responded to a multi-vehicle crash involving a dump truck and a hazardous materials spill on Interstate 95 on Thursday morning.
At approximately 8:19 a.m., Attleboro Fire crews were dispatched to the area of mile marker 2.5 on Interstate 95 North, located near Exit 2.
Upon arrival, firefighters discovered a crash involving two sedans, a sports utility vehicle and a dump truck.
Diesel fuel was leaking at the scene of the crash from a compromised fuel tank on the dump truck, causing a large amount of the hazardous substance to flow into a nearby storm drain. Firefighters quickly established a dam around the spill and the drain to prevent further contamination.
The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) was called to the scene for further investigation and remediation.
An occupant of one of the vehicles was transported to Sturdy Memorial Hospital with what is believed to be a minor injury. The vehicles sustained minor damage in the crash.
The Massachusetts State Police are investigating the cause of the crash. Attleboro firefighters cleared the scene around 9:40 a.m.
“Thanks to the swift actions of our Attleboro Fire crew, this unfortunate diesel spill was contained,” said Attleboro Fire Chief Scott T. Lachance. “The storm drain and impacted surface area were dammed up by our firefighters to prevent the fuel from spreading further and causing more contamination. Thank you to our partners at the DEP who responded and are now managing the remediation of the diesel spill.”
