October is Fire Prevention Month

The Attleboro Fire Department is recognizing Fire Prevention Month throughout October by reminding residents that simple steps can make a big difference in preventing fires at home.

This year’s theme, “Charge Into Fire Safety™. Safe Charging Is a Superpower,” focuses on the safe use and charging of lithium-ion batteries.

Lithium-ion batteries power many of the devices we use every day, including phones, laptops, e-bikes, scooters and power tools. When batteries are damaged, improperly charged or used with the wrong equipment, they can overheat and potentially cause a fire.

Residents are encouraged to follow these simple charging safety tips:

  • Use the charger that came with your device or one approved by the manufacturer.
  • Charge devices on a hard, flat surface. Avoid charging on beds, couches or other soft surfaces.
  • Charge devices while you are awake and nearby, and unplug them when fully charged.
  • When possible, charge larger items such as e-bikes, scooters and power tools outside. Never charge devices where they could block an exit.
  • Stop using a battery or device if it becomes very hot, swells, changes shape or develops an unusual smell.
  • If a battery begins smoking or catches fire, get outside and call 911.

Fire Prevention Open House

As part of Fire Prevention Month, the Attleboro Fire Department invites residents and families to attend our Fire Prevention Open House.

Saturday, October 17
10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
South Attleboro Fire Station
1476 West St.

Visitors will have an opportunity to meet Attleboro firefighters, participate in fire safety activities and learn more about keeping their families and homes safe.

The open house will include fire safety briefs, kids’ activities, refreshments and a Touch-a-Truck experience.

Fire prevention isn’t just one week. Throughout October and all year long, the Attleboro Fire Department encourages residents to take simple steps to prevent fires and keep their families safe.
