ATTLEBORO — On Thursday night at approximately 10:25 p.m., the Attleboro Fire Department responded to a report of a possible chimney fire at 140 Rocklawn Ave.
Upon arrival, crews encountered smoke filling multiple rooms inside the home. The incident was quickly upgraded to a working fire. There were no visible flames upon arrival.
Firefighters used thermal imaging cameras to search for the source of the smoke and determined the fire was traveling through concealed void spaces behind walls and between floors. Crews worked to locate and contain the hidden fire, making multiple openings in ceilings and walls to access affected areas.
The fire was brought under control and extinguished at approximately 11:30 p.m.
“This was a challenging scene,” said District Chief Gerry Brogan. “The home was set back from the roadway with limited access, which made operations more difficult. When there are no visible flames, locating the seat of the fire can be especially challenging. Our firefighters had to make numerous cuts in ceilings and walls to track down where the fire had traveled and ensure it was fully extinguished.”
National Grid was requested to the scene and secured utilities to the home.
The Attleboro Fire Department’s Fire Investigation Unit is working to determine the cause of the fire.
Crews remained on scene until approximately 1 a.m.
During the incident, the Norton, North Attleboro, Seekonk, and Pawtucket fire departments provided station coverage for the City of Attleboro.
