Attleboro Fire Department Paramedics Participate in Advanced Airway and Chest Decompression Training

ATTLEBORO — This week, Attleboro Fire Department paramedics participated in advanced airway management and chest decompression training designed to prepare crews for some of the most critical medical emergencies encountered in the field.

The hands-on training utilized sheep lungs to closely mimic human tissue, allowing paramedics to practice lifesaving procedures in a realistic environment. These procedures included needle cricothyrotomy, an emergency airway technique used when a patient’s airway cannot be secured through conventional methods, and needle chest decompression, a procedure performed to relieve pressure caused by a tension pneumothorax, a life-threatening condition where air becomes trapped in the chest cavity and prevents the lungs from functioning properly.

While these procedures are rarely required, they are often performed in situations where seconds matter and immediate intervention can mean the difference between life and death.

District Chief Steve Stellakis emphasized the importance of realistic training for advanced medical providers.

“These are low-frequency occurrences, but when these procedures are needed in the field, they must be performed quickly, accurately, and efficiently,” said Stellakis. “Training like this is invaluable and ensures Attleboro’s paramedics are prepared to handle any emergency they may encounter.”

This training is part of the hundreds of hours of continuing education and skills training Attleboro firefighters and paramedics complete each year in addition to responding to emergency incidents. Ongoing training ensures department members maintain proficiency in the latest firefighting, rescue, and advanced life support techniques while providing the highest level of service to the community.
