In accordance with Massachusetts Air Pollution Regulations 310 CMR 7.07(3)(e) and 310 CMR 7.07(3)(g), the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection is notifying local fire departments in ALL Massachusetts Fire and Incident Support Unit (ISU) Response Districts that open burning permits are NOT TO BE ISSUED TODAY, Thursday, April 13, 2023, because air pollution levels are predicted to be elevated. Any open burning today would cause and contribute to a condition of air pollution.
Today, moderate-to-USG (Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups) levels of ozone are forecast to occur over much of the state, especially during the afternoon hours. Elevated ozone levels are due, in part, to the unusually warm airmass currently over our region. Any open burning today would likely result in further elevating these ozone concentrations.
