Summer Safety Tips

Summer is a great time to enjoy the outdoors, whether you’re at the pool, the beach, on the water, or spending time in your backyard. A few simple precautions can help keep you and your family safe all season long.

Stay Hydrated
• Drink plenty of water throughout the day, even if you don’t feel thirsty.
• Avoid excessive caffeine and alcohol, which can contribute to dehydration.
• Take frequent breaks in the shade or air conditioning during periods of extreme heat.

Protect Yourself From the Sun
• Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher before going outside.
• Reapply sunscreen every two hours, or more often after swimming or sweating.
• Wear sunglasses, a wide-brimmed hat, and lightweight clothing to help protect your skin.

Pool and Swimming Safety
• Never leave children unattended near water, even for a moment.
• Designate a responsible adult as a “Water Watcher” whose only job is to supervise swimmers.
• Install and maintain barriers or fencing around pools with self-closing, self-latching gates.
• Make sure everyone knows how to swim, and consider enrolling children in swim lessons.
• Keep a phone nearby and know basic CPR in case of an emergency.

Boating Safety
• Have a properly fitted U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket. Children should wear one at all times while on the water.
• Never operate a boat while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
• Check the weather forecast before heading out and monitor conditions while on the water.
• Make sure your boat has all required safety equipment, including life jackets, fire extinguishers, signaling devices, and navigation lights.

Beat the Heat
• Never leave children or pets unattended in a vehicle, even for a few minutes.
• Check on older adults, neighbors, and others who may be more vulnerable during hot weather.
• Know the signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. If someone becomes confused, loses consciousness, or has a high body temperature, call 911 immediately.

A little preparation goes a long way toward preventing emergencies. By taking a few simple safety precautions, you can help ensure that everyone enjoys a safe, fun, and memorable summer.
