Attleboro, MA – The Attleboro Fire Department has launched a new weekly group fitness initiative aimed at reducing injuries, improving performance, and building long-term health among firefighters. Starting this Tuesday, firefighters from the department will meet weekly for guided, fireground-focused workouts that strengthen the body and improve mobility, endurance, and injury resilience.
The program was created by Firefighter Paramedic Kelsea LeBlanc, who saw a clear need for a consistent, department-wide approach to fitness and wellness.
“We train constantly to improve our skills, but fitness is a critical part of that,” said LeBlanc. “This program is about showing up for each other, staying strong for the job, and making sure everyone goes home healthy. If we can prevent even one injury or get someone back to work faster, it’s worth every rep.”

Firefighters face some of the most physically demanding work environments of any profession. Strains, sprains, and overexertion injuries are the leading causes of line-of-duty injuries, many of which may be preventable with the right training and conditioning. National studies have shown that fire departments with dedicated fitness programs see 25–50% fewer injuries and 30% shorter recovery times when injuries occur.
“Firefighters are tactical athletes,” said Assistant Chief Dennis Perkins. “The stronger and more prepared our crews are, the safer they’ll be for themselves and the people we serve. This program builds that strength, both physically and mentally.”
The Tuesday sessions will rotate in focus each week, from functional strength to cardiovascular endurance, mobility, and core stability. The workouts are designed to be accessible for all fitness levels. The long-term goal is to enhance on-scene performance, prevent downtime, and build a culture of wellness throughout the department.
